February 23, 2008: Engineers Week 2008

IIT students in the VoIP and Telecom classes again sponsored a VoIPirates demonstration, showing the children who attended the Saturday, Feb 25 EWeek event how to make audio/video calls using VoIP technologies - and how vulnerable those calls are to the pirates who lurk on the Internet. Each year IIT Rice Campus sponsors Engineers Week activities including a Saturday day-long engineering festival aimed at school-age children and their parents. Complete with interactive exhibits, goodies and engineers from all disciplines, this annual event is a great opportunity for children to learn about what engineers, technologists and scientists do and how our work impacts their lives and communities.

February 11, 2008: VoIP Roundtable 2:
Security Event Management System - A Case Study

The second VoIP Roundtable of the 2007-2008 academic year was held on February 11, 2008. Dr. Vijay Gurbani of the Bell Labs Division of Alcatel-Lucent described his current work developing a Security Event Management System. Such systems will support the wide-scale deployment of VoIP networks by enabling network operators to determine whether the network is under attack and to take evasive action as needed. In his talk, Dr. Gurbani described his work in constructing a security event management system using a mix of open source and internally developed software. The talk described the results of constructing the system and lessons learned as well as an outline for future research in this area. Presentation slides and video of the discussion are available at the links below.
